Hitting the Big Three-Oh

Making lifestyle changes we’ve only had nightmares about.

Our parents had to wait for their 10th year or 20th year reunion to realize what the trend was for their school batch. But for our impatient, information-whore generation, all we have to do is log into facebook.

If you wanted to find out if sh*t just got real, check out your facebook feed trend. What I find in my account are either weddings, kid photos, or the current exercise trends. Because just like me, many of my generation are finally figuring out they’re not superhuman, and the years of late nights, early drinks and that crispy, juicy, oily crispy pata is finally catching up.

Working from home, things are often either better, or worse than the normal commuting public. When we say we stay up late, we stay up til 9 in the morning. When we say we eat a lot, it’s actually every 15 minutes. So when I hit thirty, it felt like hitting forty. It was like time finally slowed down just because it wanted me to see how dry and pasty my complexion was, how bad my posture had become, how many flabs had formed on my waist line, how many more pounds there are on the weighing scale, and how many medical specialists I was thinking of seeing. I didn’t have the luxury of choice, I knew I needed to make that change.

When working from home, it’s easier to indulge to guilty pleasures, and harder to keep a healthier lifestyle, but once you make that choice, the simplest of things can make a difference.

Here’s a list of things you can do to become a healthier work at home mom:

1. Drink lots of water. In fact, just keep a bottle beside you and refill immediately when it runs out. This is the easiest thing you can do. It will do wonders for your skin. Aside from the obvious health benefits, the need to walk to the bathroom will keep you awake. 😀

2. Do yoga. Since I started yoga classes, I have lost that all backpains I’ve been complaining about over the years and develop better posture. I can swear by it. It also relieves a bit of stress by taking your mind off work.

Don’t have time to go to the gym? I would first recommend you make time. But if that’s a hundred percent impossible, there are apps you can download to teach you the basic poses. However, there are some poses that you might do wrong, and it’s best to at least know the basics.

I’m not singling yoga out, it’s best to do any exercise. Start your day by takign a run around the neighborhood. Can’t focus? Do a set of sit-ups. You don’t have to be G.I. Jane, just listen to your body, and just find ways to break a sweat.

3. Replace your munchies with fruits. Living in Davao, I have the benefit of having several fruits in season the whole year round. I resisted at first, but the habit will grow on you.

Love ice cream? Replace it with fruit yogurt. It’s a bit expensive, but there are lots of DIY yogurt videos. I haven’t tried making my own, but my sister has, and I’m also considering learning to make it to get more off the computer time.

4. To follow-up on #3. Take some time off the computer, without doing chores for the kids. It won’t kill you I promise. If you drink coffee before and in between work, take it away from the computer. Play with your pets. Start a mini- garden. Learn how to cook (note to self).

There are a bunch of other things you can do, or I should have done, but so far, these 4 are the only ones I have managed to start. This isn’t even limited to the WAHMs out there. If you’re young and working online from home, don’t be like me. I’d be laughing at this article.

Try and take the best out of working from home. You’re never stuck with just fast food as your only lunch option. You get to eat healthier, home made meals. And if you’re you’re young and still far from feeling pains from your back, arthritis, liver, lung and whatever body part, like us, then at least think of your vanity. Imagine what your skin, eye bags, and body will look like 5 years from now with that kind of lifestyle.
