To My Little Girl:Why Real Life Happy Endings Are So Much Cooler

Dear Nicky,

Your father and I would like to apologize for some the movies and TV shows you have seen us watching lately. Your Papa and I love romantic comedies. We love the singing along to the music of Disney princess movies. My working at home has also exposed you to my guilty pleasure: cheesy Koreanovelas.

We enjoy watching these shows because they all have happy endings. It worries me that you might think that all stories end this way. The happy endings you see in these shows rarely happen in real life.

Life can be hard and when you look around you, you’ll seen that not everyone gets a happy ending. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a happy ending. We can all have happy endings, it just won’t look the same way it happens in the movies or on TV. But don’t be disappointed; based on our extensive experience, I can honestly say that real life happy endings are way cooler than any anything you’ll see in the movies or watch on TV

Like every heroine, you will struggle. If it were up to me, I’d take you away from all that but it’s something you need to go through. All the best heroines go through struggle in order to build themselves. This is why I make you clean up your room and brush your teeth by yourself. Your family and your true friends will try to help you in any way that they can but for the most part, you will be on your own.

And don’t expect a knight in shining armour to take you away and solve your problems for you. The chances of that happening are slim but don’t worry, this is a good thing. This means you’ll be right in the middle of all the action. You’re the heroine, and this automatically makes you tough enough to handle anything that comes your way.

And speaking of knights, if someone does come don’t expect them to make a grand entrance in their shining armor with bags of gold. More often than not he would stumble in on the scene unannounced and unexpected. Most likely your knight would have a heart of gold instead of coins that come in a bag. His armor would be banged up and tarnished from all the dragon fighting he has to do in his own life. He’ll help fight your demons with you, but he can’t and won’t fight them for you. And in some cases, you may have to take on your own  armour and sword and help your knight fight his demons.

This means you’ll have more work to do but trust me, this is more exciting than watching your hero fight a dragon from  the sidelines. In this case, you get to be each other’s heroes;like the Teen Titans show you love so much. This would make your story a whole lot cooler because everyone gets to be a hero.

The heroines in our favorite TV shows and movies seem perfect and infallible. They always do the right thing, they’re always there in the nick of time, and they always look good doing it. That’s the beauty of post production editing.

You can’t run in heels safely, no matter how “comfortable” they might look. There will be days when you won’t have time to get your hair done and your make up ready. If you run into some action, you will need a good sports bra and comfortable clothes. And we both already know you have a tendency to throw a tantrum when you don’t get what you want and when you’re proven wrong.

Life doesn’t offer editing options to cut out the bad hair days and the mistakes, but don’t worry. We cheer heroines when they bounce back, not when they fall down. Just bounce back every time you fall and they won’t notice that you didn’t have your make-up on or that you wore your shirt in reverse.

Another thing that makes real life awesome is it doesn’t end at happily ever after. Like Dragon Ball Z, James Bond, or Terry Pratchett novels, the story goes on and on. You will encounter more adventures: away from home, close to home, and sometimes, even inside your own head. You’ll experience different genres. And if you Papa and I will have our way, we hope some of your best adventures will involve science fiction and fantasy.

Each story will be different and exciting in their own right. Some endings may be sadder than most, but in the end they will be happy. They will be happy because there will always be people who love you and there will always be someone who you love that will make everything worthwhile.

Whatever the story Nicky, find your happy ending. Because the best stories end with a happy ending.

With love,

Mama

Bravo mom! In my son’s infancy, I felt all the vulnerability and yes, if we could just take that away…you’ve said it beautifully. Thank you. =>

You’re welcome. It’s hard not to be overprotective but there’s definitely that rush of pride when you see them growing up to be so self-reliant =)

    Stopping by from SITS.

I think little girls need to know that life isn’t always what they see in the fairy tales. Sometimes the ending isn’t happy and sometimes you need to be your own knight. Great post.
